~ An exhibition of Pichwai Paintings ~
Art Cafe at Sheraton Grand Bangalore Hotel at Brigade Gateway in association with Artisera presents ‘Ode To Krishna’, an exhibition of Pichwai Paintings at Art Cafe.
A Pichwai is a scrupulously detailed, hand-painted textile, traditionally hung behind the idol of Shrinathji—an incarnation of the Hindu god Krishna. Worshipped by the Vaishnavites sub-sect of the Pushtimarg, it was founded by Shri Vallabhacharya in the 16th century. The temple town of Nathdwara in Udaipur, Rajasthan is home to Shrinathji’s main shrine, which is highly revered and visited by devotees. Pichwai style of painting originated over 400 years ago in the town of Nathdwara, near Udaipur in Rajasthan, India. Intricate and visually stunning Pichwai paintings are typically made on cloth and narrate tales from Lord Krishna’s life. Celebrating the age-old tradition of Pichwai painting, the exhibition showcases a collection of beautifully detailed Pichwais that depict tales from the life of Lord Krishna, often portrayed as a seven-year-old child, Shrinathji. Over time, Pichwais also found a place in the homes of art connoisseurs, owing to their visual appeal. Like several other traditional Indian art forms, the art of Pichwai is also dying and requires recognition and revival. The word Pichwai comes from ‘Pichh” meaning back, and ‘Wai’, meaning textile hanging. Originally, they were used to decorate the temple of Shrinathji in Nathdwara, hung behind the deity to celebrate different seasons and events in his life.
