18 November,2019: A high-powered business and financial hub, Frankfurt is home to the glowing headquarter of the Central Bank. However, at its heart, it is a vibrant, traditional and a charming city.
The Frankfurt Christmas Market is the best place to experience the true holiday spirit.
The tradition of the Frankfurt market stretches back to the 14th century making it the oldest in Germany. It lures the region with historical settings, traditional food and handcrafted souvenirs.
The scenic surroundings on the Römerberg and St Paul’s Square houses more than 200 stands with people selling colourful Christmas tree decorations, candles, sweets and candy and traditional German cuisines.
This year, the Christmas Markets will be held from 25th November to 22nd December 2019.
During this time, the historic old town is brightly illuminated by thousands of fairy lights reflecting off windows of the traditional half- timbered houses. The scent of baked apples, gingerbread and mulled wine fills the air.
This spectacular market stretches from Frankfurt’s Hauptwache all the way to the Main riverbank. A 104 feet tall Christmas tree adorns the centre of the market square. Make sure to try the local specialities, such as the Bethmännchen, Lebkuchen, Christmas cookies with marzipan and almond and glühwein- a traditional spiced wine that is served warm.
The Artists Christmas market is a major art exhibition at the St. Paul’s church and the Römer. The exhibits in this market consists of paintings, sculpture, jewellery and trinkets that make for great Christmas presents.
Another highlight in Frankfurt during the festive season is the Chiming of the Church bells.
Frankfurt’s famous Pealing of the Bells takes place four times every year. Two of these half hour performances are perfectly timed for visitors during the festive season. The bells of Frankfurt’s downtown churches ring in harmony for half an hour on the 1st December and 24th December Witness this symphonic soundtrack – and keep your fingers crossed for snowflakes!
Guests can also explore the Christmas Markets with special guided tours. On advance booking, a group of ~20 guests can witness a Christmas marvel in a one-and-a-half-hour tour. It begins on the main entrance and takes you through the market’s culinary specialities and traditions.

Tickets are priced at EUR 150 and is open from 10:30 am to 4:00pm.
In terms of visitor numbers, the Frankfurt Christmas market is the largest in Germany with over 3 million visitors.
