‘Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary’
-Jim Rohn-

It was in June 1904 that Gandhiji made a long journey in train from Johannesburg to Durban in South Africa. When the train was about to depart, one of his friends, Henry Polak came hurried to the station to say farewell to him. He opened his hand bag and took out a book and gave to Gandhiji so that he could read during his journey. The book was Unto This Last written by John Ruskin.

Gandhiji eagerly read that book at one stretch. The reading of that book was a turning point in his life. He once confessed that this book brought about an instantaneous practical transformation in his life. He even wrote about this in his autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth’ under a separate chapter, titled as ‘The Magic Spell of a Book’. In 1908 he summarized the contents of the book Un to This Last in Guajarati as Sarvodaya in nine installments.

This shows the magical power of a good book to influence one’s attitude and thinking, to change one’s personality and personal life. Orhan Pamuk, the famous Turkish novelist and recipient of the 2006 Nobel Prize in literature, once revealed; ‘I read a book one day and my whole life was changed’. If we study or observe the success stories of the greatest men in this world, we can understand that main source of their success is the knowledge they acquired through the habit of reading.
