5 Things to Do Before You Turn 30

Turning 30 is a big milestone in people’s lives and it tends to mark the beginning of true adulthood when you are expected to have figured out what you want from life and are well on the way to achieving those goals. However, you can’t know what you want unless you have tried different things, experienced various lifestyles and had fun in your 20s. You shouldn’t be afraid to experiment, even if you end up making mistakes and poor choices. After all, owning up to your mistakes and learning from them is one of the marks of real maturity. This is by no means a definitive guide, but it can give you some good ideas and guidelines for the top five things to do before you hit the big three-oh.

Travel the world

Travelling is something everyone should do while they’re young since you are not encumbered by the responsibilities of a family or a demanding career. Not only will you get to see a lot of amazing sights and experience other cultures but you will also meet a lot of interesting people who could become your lifelong friends. Not to mention that in your 20s you have a lot more energy and curiosity and usually won’t mind spending the night in a sleeping bag, tent or sub-par accommodation. Sometimes people fall in love with a country or city so much they end up moving there to study or work and, in some cases, even decide to stay there for good.

Get a tattoo

A tattoo isn’t just a fashion choice, it’s a piece of art on your body and has a meaning behind it. Some people are fascinated by a foreign culture and, like many Australians, decide to get Japanese style tattoos, while others prefer tattooing important dates or initials of a loved one. Whatever your choice is, as you grow old, it becomes a reminder of an important event from your youth, whether it represents something good and positive or your strength and perseverance in overcoming a bad or traumatic experience. Some people avoid getting a tattoo because they are afraid it will look bad when they’re older, but it actually becomes a personalized snapshot of your past and a story to tell your kids and grandkids.

Try extreme sports

Trying an extreme sport should be on everyone’s to-do list, even if they aren’t adrenaline junkies. There’s nothing in the world that can successfully simulate the rush you feel when you are in free fall after jumping from a plane with a parachute on your back or when you are hurtling down rapids in an inflatable raft. And while there’s no rule that you can’t do this stuff when you get older, sometimes you are forced to skip them due to health issues that develop later in life, so you should make the most of it while you are still young and healthy.

Get in shape

Speaking of health, being in good shape is definitely a constant process, but getting in shape in your 20s sets a foundation for your physical fitness that will make it much easier to stay in shape in your 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. And since fitness is as much about eating right as it is about working out, you will learn how to have a healthy and balanced diet. Plus, looking your best will also significantly help you in your dating life, which is always a good thing.

Follow your passions

Your 20s are not the time you should be worrying about making tons of money or committing to a single company. Try out different jobs and careers based on your interests and passions. Sometimes things won’t work out for you, but the lessons you take away from those failures will be a better teacher than any university and will ultimately make you a better person. But sometimes, if you work hard enough and Lady Luck grants you her favour, you may just end up making it big by doing what you love.
