Improving Your Concentration

Our mind simply cannot work in chaos. It is not natural. As human senses are prone to easy distractions, our concentration can be broken in seconds. The door opens, you get distracted; someone texts you, you get distracted; you hear a song from a distance, you get distracted; nobody does anything and you are sitting in a complete silence – your mind will distract itself. That is how weak human concentration span is. However, there are many ways that can help you improve your concentration, and the best of them are listed below.

Your environment matters

Yes, the environment has probably the biggest impact on our concentration, and it is the crucial decision we make when we have to focus on something. When working on something important, choose environments that are calm and have the least distractions possible, comfortable seating, and proper lighting. Keep all the things you think you will need around you – from writing tools all the way to snacks and water. Don’t let even hunger or thirst distract you.

Multitasking is your worst enemy

Although multitasking can sometimes be quite useful for getting things done, it isn’t something you should indulge in. Why? Because multitasking simply doesn’t let you focus on the more important part of your assignment. In other words, rather than multitasking, try sticking to mono-tasking. Don’t transfer to the next part of the job until you completely finish the first one.

Do not procrastinate

Yes, we are all a group of lazy creatures that would procrastinate breathing if we only could, but let’s face it, procrastinating is not good for us. And the cure against it is to start forcing yourself to do it less and less. Give yourself an order not to leave your spot until you finish one part of the job. And once you are halfway into it, you will have no trouble finding motivation for the other half.

Meditate

Meditation is a very powerful tool that can be used for many life aspects, as well as increasing concentration. Why? Because it works as a magnifier. If you are not concentrated, you cannot meditate in the first place, but once you succeed, your concentration span will rapidly improve.  Besides that, you will also get many other benefits such as improved mood, diminished anxiety, reduced panic disorder symptoms, increased grey matter in the brain, decreased need for sleep, improved information processing and decision making, mental strength, pain relief, and so much more.

Do not underestimate the power of music

Did you know that there is actually a thing called concentration music? This type of music is known to more or less calm our brain waves and put us in a more concentrated mode. So, the next time you have to do something important that requires maximum focus, put your headphones on and play some soft jazz, instrumentals, natural sounds, or alpha waves.

Get enough sleep

A tired brain simply cannot work nor focus the right way. Make sure you get at least 7 hours of sleep each day in order to know you will give your 100 percent the next one, too.

Understand your tasks and divide them

People often rush into starting tasks without even trying to understand them first. When you take time to first understand what exactly you need to do, you will have a clearer plan and finish it much easier. By dividing your tasks into smaller chunks, you will both start and finish much faster and do the job much better.

Stay positive!

If you keep telling yourself your concentration is bad, it will really become bad. Stop making yourself feel low and try to erase negative thoughts from your head completely. Just take a look at the headline of this paragraph – stay positive. It is the same as: don’t be negative, but in this way, negativity is not even mentioned. It takes practice, but eventually, it will pay off, not just in terms of concentration, but you will improve your mental health and the quality of your life in general.

That would basically be it. We hope these tips will help you be more focused and productive. If you have some more suggestions you would like to share with us, feel free to leave your comment.
