When we see very successful people  we usually say that they are lucky guys. We consider Amitabh Bachan, Shah Rukh Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, A.R. Rahman, J.K Rowling, Lionel Messy and Maria Sharapova as lucky individuals. Why some are very lucky and others are not so. What is the hidden secret of luck? Is it merely accidental or is there any cognizable science behind this?

When we happen to fail a number of times in any endeavor or face extreme difficulties in life, we think that we are unlucky. There is a tendency in many to assign the cause of their failures to bad luck and the cause of achievements of others to good luck. We say the fairies of good luck have smiled upon them whereas the black witches have brewed bad luck for us.

Richard Wiseman, a psychology professor of the University of Hertfordshire, UK, conducted personality tests and other experiments on a set of lucky people individually in laboratory. All these experiments and studies revealed certain amazing facts about luck. Luck is not merely an accidental thing. People are not born as lucky or unlucky, but they create their own luck or ill luck through their thought processes and actions that follow.

Wiseman’s long research identified certain peculiar and unique characteristics of lucky people.

  1. Lucky people consistently search for new opportunities or create better opportunities.
  2. They respect and respond to their intuition or luck hunches and act upon.
  3. They always dream and desire for success and try to fulfill them.
  4. Their attitude of hard work turns even bad luck in to good luck.In short, a lucky individual creates his own luck, firstly, in imagination and then in reality by his hard work. As Ray Kroc, the most successful American business man, pointed out from his experience; ‘Luck is the dividend of sweat; the more you sweat, the luckier you get’.

Today many are disappointed and complaining about their ill luck. They try to eliminate bad luck and attract good luck in several ways. Some are doing ‘Poojas’ and special prayers. For example, breaking of mirrors, walking under ladders, crossing the path of a black cat, seeing an owl during the day are considered as bad omens bringing bad luck.  But there is no scientific basis for all these beliefs and they are considered as mere superstitions by scientific community. There is an array of great personalities in history who actually turned their bad luck in to enviable good luck. Helen Keller was blind, deaf and mute; but in spite of her multiple disabilities she became very successful and famous with her relentless hard work and commitment and created her own hall mark and history.

Ludwig Beethoven lost his hearing power turning himself a stone deaf but he succeeded to create the greatest works of music after this. Just imagine Nicholas James Vujicic was born without limbs. He then went ahead and learned to live effectively without hands and legs, with nobody’s help or support. He became world famous motivational speaker, evangelist and author. Jessica Cox  was born without arms and was considered as an unlucky child. 1.Desire and dream good luck

2.Don’t miss your opportunities

Lucky people always look for new opportunities that may bring luck and success to them. According to the famous ancient Roman philosopher Seneca; ‘Luck is a matter of meeting opportunity’. So never miss a chance. Never turn back impatiently when luck is about to come dancing along your way. If chances are rare, try to create them because, chance opportunities are your openings to luck and your golden key to future success.

3.Keep a luck diary

If you can make it a habit to remember and note down the lucky incidents and success experiences you had in a diary regularly, your thoughts and imaginations will be focused and fine tuned to luck and success. Then you begin to feel and experience that you are lucky. As the famous American play write stated; ‘Luck is believing you’re lucky.’

4.Work hard with enthusiasm

Thomas Jefferson, the third president of USA used to say; ‘I am a great believer in luck and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it’. Your hard work is the most cardinal single factor that brings luck and success to your life.

The most successful people were risk takers in their lives, all throughout.  Bill gates dared to abandon his studies for business. If you are not ready to move out of your comfort zone and take up the risks for a better opportunity with optimism, you will never be able to achieve great things in life. 6.Listen to your inner voices

Listen to your intuitive inner voices and be bold enough to obey them. Many a times your intuition is more reliable than your logic. Oprah Winfrey who is considered as World’s most influential and successful woman, advises; ‘Trust your heart and success will come to you’.

7.Nurture new relations

You may get unexpected opportunities and novel ideas from your new friends and relations, and they may bring luck and success to you. So use your chances for new contacts and friendships. As the famous German philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer said; ‘Friends and acquaintances are the surest passport to future’.
